1) центральное понятие в ООП, обозначающее способность объекта выбирать правильный метод (внутреннюю процедуру объекта) в зависимости от типа данных, полученных в сообщении (message). Благодаря полиморфизму объект выполняет нужные действия, даже если содержимое сообщения было неизвестно во время написания программы. Другими словами - это использование под одним именем различных процедур, связанных с обработкой данных разного типа, например операции сложения (+) для вещественных и целых чисел.
